Sow directly outdoors;¼-inch deep after the last frost when the soil temperature is 65–70°F. Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny area. Cover seeds lightly but firmly. Keep the surface moist until germination. Thin to 9-12 inches after the first true leaves appear. If started indoors, start 4 weeks earlier in a propagator, sowing 3-4 seeds in each cell. Gently push them into a good-quality, moist compost and cover with ¼-inch sieved compost. Keep the soil moist. Once true leaves have grown, transplant outdoors 14 inches apart in a sunny place.
