How to Install Ignition Coils Step1 Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Pull the cable down to the side of the battery to make sure it doesn't accidentally come into contact with the terminal of the battery as you work. Step2 Disconnect each cable leading to the coil. Loosen the clip on the plug on the side of the coil. Step3 Use a wrench to unscrew the bolts holding the coil in place. Remove coil from engine compartment. Fit the socket wrench with the extension rod and use a ratchet to slowly and carefully remove the spark plug from the housing, then insert the new plug and ratchet it tight. Step4 Compare the new coil with the old one before installing it. Make sure the new coil has the same number of ports as the ignition cable. Step5 Position the new coil in the same direction as the old coil. Insert the bolt to secure the coil. Step6 Insert the plug into the port on the new ignition coil. Insert each ignition cable into the coil. Step7 Reconnect the battery. (Be careful when you connect the negative cable to the terminal.) Start the vehicle to test the new ignition coil. Step8 Note: If you do not have sufficient skill or experience to install this part, it is recommended that you seek help from a qualified mechanic.
