There are 4 options in securing the caps to the posts: tape, nails, screws and adhesive. For tape, stick some mounting tape inside the cap and then snap on. For both nails & screws, you'll need to drill a pilot hole in at least two sides of the caps. If using an adhesive, ensure that said adhesive will bond on both plastic and wood

For this reason, it's important to measure all posts. You don't need to measure that entire post, just the edges surrounding the end grain. For the plastic fence post caps to fit, the edges around the post's end grain should be approximately 3 5/8" by 5 5/8". If you need to make adjustments for the plastic caps to fit, ensure that the posts' edges won't go beyond the caps' 1/2" inner edge/lip.
