Buying a refurbished Apple laptop

Most listings here are Intel MacBooks, and most of those are 2017 to 2020 models. Apple Silicon models (M1 and later) currently sell above CA$800. A well-kept Intel model still handles browsing, email, documents and light multitasking. At this price, condition and battery matter most, so look for battery health or a cycle count when the seller gives one. For modern creative or developer tools, check the year, chip, RAM and storage in the title: a 16GB Intel model will handle them better than a 4GB base model. Also check which macOS version the model can run (see the FAQ below).

Listings come from each retailer's own inventory. The seller sets the condition grade, and we show it as listed without re-grading.

Which one should I buy?

  • Tight budget, just need it to work: look for the lowest-priced MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM. It's the lightest and cheapest option here and fine for browsing and documents.
  • Photo or light video editing: a 13-inch MacBook Pro with 8GB or more of RAM and a larger SSD will cope better than a base Air.
  • Newest hardware at this price: pick a 2019 or 2020 Intel model with the most RAM and storage you can find under CA$800. The four-port 13-inch Pro (2020) is the only 13-inch model here that can run macOS Tahoe 26.
  • Not sure: begin with the OpenBoxFox Picks above. Best Overall ranks by processor first, then RAM, storage and condition. Best Value gives the most of that for the price, and Most Storage has the most space.

What do the condition grades mean?

Very Good
Light cosmetic wear, such as minor scuffs on the case or keyboard.
Good
More visible wear, such as scratches or scuffs on the case or screen.
Used
Sold by the retailer without a formal refurbishment grade. Condition varies more than in the graded tiers, so read the listing description closely.

Each seller sets its own grades, and they aren't standardized across retailers, so check the listing for details. Our guide to open-box condition grades explains the common scales.

Before you buy: a quick checklist

  • Confirm the RAM and storage in the title meet your needs. They can't be upgraded later on these models.
  • Check the retailer's return window and warranty on the listing.
  • Note the year and screen size. A 2015 and a 2019 model can sell for similar prices but perform very differently.
  • If battery life matters, look for a stated battery health or cycle count, or a listing that mentions a new battery.
  • These models are past Apple's one-year warranty, so the seller's warranty and return policy are what cover you. If a listing mentions remaining AppleCare, ask the seller to confirm it transfers to you.

MacBook FAQ

What's the cheapest MacBook right now?

Prices on this page start at CA$334 and stay under CA$800. Each listing shows the seller's condition grade.

How should I compare these macbooks?

Compare the exact specifications and current selling price, then check the retailer’s condition description, warranty and return terms.

Browse the full Laptops category for every brand, price point and condition.

Can I get an M1 or M2 MacBook under CA$800?

Not right now. Every listing under CA$800 is an Intel MacBook. M1 and newer models currently sell above this price in Canada.

What's the difference between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro listings here?

Most listings at this price are Intel models. The Air is thinner and lighter and uses integrated graphics. The Pro generally has a faster processor than an Air from the same year, and some 15- and 16-inch Pros add a separate graphics chip, which helps with photo and video editing.

Is an older Intel MacBook still worth buying in 2026?

For browsing, email, documents and streaming, it can be at this price, but check which macOS version it runs. macOS Tahoe 26 is the last version of macOS for Intel Macs, and among MacBooks only the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019) and the four-port 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020) can run it. Other models stay on earlier versions, and apps and browsers drop support for those over time. Apple also generally stops repairing a Mac seven years after it last sold that model, so most repairs on these machines go to independent shops.

How much RAM do I need in a MacBook?

4GB handles basic browsing and documents but slows down with many tabs open. 8GB is comfortable for everyday multitasking and is common at this price. RAM on these models is built into the logic board and can't be upgraded later, so buy what you need.

Is it safe to buy a refurbished MacBook?

Usually, if the listing shows a clear condition grade and the seller accepts returns. Check both on the listing before you buy. A refurbished MacBook is usually a used or open-box unit that was inspected and graded before resale.
